Origin - Where Did the Poodle Come From?
The poodle is commonly called the “French Poodle”. Even though the poodle is the national dog for France there is no such breed as the “French Poodle”. The French people do however love their standard poodles and they are known as Caniche or “duck dog” in France. Even though the poodle is so popular in France, the poodle first originated as a duck hunter in Germany. In German, the word Pudelin means “splashing in water”. The poodle's curly coat which protects it from the outdoor elements, and its superb swimming abilities, and keen intelligence, the standard poodle was and still is a magnificent retriever.
The Flamboyant “foo-foo” show clip that poodles are known to sport, in the show world, does serve a purpose and came to be in the early years of hunting. Hunters wanted the poodle to have a free range of motion in the water but they also wanted to protect their vital organs and anatomy from the cold. They shaved the legs, neck, and tail, but left the chest, hips, and leg joints covered.
Poodles were imported to America in the 20th century and slowly rose in popularity. They are now among the top 10 most popular breeds in the United States.
